Enhancing Apple Production through Drip Irrigation

Nepal Thopa Sinchai (NTS), a renowned agriculture inputs and solutions provider, has installed a drip irrigation system in an apple orchard named Chimle Orchards, located in Jomsom, Mustang, Nepal. Chimle Orchards has around 15,000 plants with a plant-to-plant distance of 3 to 4 feet and row-to-row distance of 10 to 11 feet. NTS has installed a total length of 16,000 meters of drip line, which will provide water and nutrients directly to the root zone of each plant. The drip irrigation system has not only improved the overall yield of the orchard but has also reduced their water usage, which has led to cost savings. Each plant produces 12 to 15 kilograms of apples each year.

One of the key advantages of drip irrigation is that it helps conserve water. Unlike traditional irrigation methods, where water is sprayed over the entire area, drip irrigation supplies water directly to the root zone of each plant. This is especially important in a country like Nepal, where water scarcity is a major concern. Additionally, the minimized water usage inhibits the growth of pests that thrive in humid conditions, thereby promoting a healthier and sustainable crop growth.
