In the heart of bustling Kathmandu, where the air often hangs heavy with pollution and the streets are clogged with traffic, a new wave of change began in 2021. Recognizing the urgent need for a sustainable urban solution, Green Movers, launched the Green Way app with ambitious vision: to make sustainable urban living a reality for every Nepali. The app was born out of necessity, created in response to Kathmandu’s growing pollution and the need for practical, eco-friendly alternatives to the city’s gridlock.
The Green Way app quickly became a game-changer. At its core, it is planning to introduce a public bicycle-sharing system that allows users to rent bicycles—both electric and non-electric—right from their smartphones. For Kathmandu’s residents, this is more than just a convenient way to get around. It is an affordable, eco-friendly alternative to motorized transport, one that empowered individuals to reduce their carbon footprints and make a real impact on the environment.
But Green Way is more than just a bike rental service. The app features innovative tracking tools that allow users to monitor their rides, calculate their carbon savings, and even track calories burned. These features encourage a sense of friendly competition, as users earn GreenUp Points as they cycle their way toward a greener future.
Beyond mobility, the app has also turned into a hub for community engagement, uniting like-minded individuals in the fight for a sustainable Kathmandu. Regular events, like the Greenway Sustainable Mela, Ride and Win challenges, and even treasure hunts, create a lively ecosystem of environmental advocates.
In a short span of time, Green Way has gained significant traction, with over 9,000 downloads and 1,500 active users. The app has become a symbol of the shift toward sustainable living in Kathmandu, and its reach continues to grow.
From Tracking to Transforming: The Evolution of Green Way
Initially, the Green Way app was designed to track individual bicycle rides, allowing users to log miles, measure their environmental impact, and participate in the growing cycling culture in Kathmandu. This early version of the app encouraged residents to shift towards biking by incentivizing each km through cash. However, as the Green Way team recognized the potential to impact transportation on a larger scale, they dreamed of expanding the app into a full-fledged bicycle rental platform that could reshape urban travel patterns, also with the lens of sustainability in mind.
The grant and business development support from USAID Clean Air allowed them to pivot from a ride-tracking app to a comprehensive bicycle-sharing service that would enable users to rent bicycles—both electric and non-electric—directly from their smartphones. This expansion transformed Green Way into a platform that could serve as both a personal fitness tool and a convenient, affordable transportation alternative, empowering users to actively reduce their carbon footprints.

With this support, Green Movers revamped the app, incorporating advanced GPS technology and real-time bike availability tracking. These new features allow users to locate and rent bikes in their vicinity, check bike availability in real-time, and even see nearby bike stations, making eco-friendly commuting easier than ever.
Looking ahead, the next version of Greenway will include advanced GPS integration and real-time bike availability, giving users the ability to locate and rent bicycles with greater ease.
Expanding Beyond Mobility: The Green Marketplace
Green Movers also recognized that sustainability extends beyond transportation. USAID Clean Air’s support has also enabled Green Movers to explore an entirely new avenue: a Green Marketplace. Green Movers leveraged the additional funding and expertise to create a platform where users could discover green products, eco-friendly businesses, and sustainable lifestyle choices. This new section of the app offers marketplace filters and product categories, turning Green Way into a one-stop shop for eco-conscious consumers. Users can now explore sustainable goods, support environmentally friendly businesses, and make informed choices that further reduce their environmental impact—all within the same app they use for their daily commutes. The app will also offer new marketplace filters, notifications, and expanded community features, allowing users to find nearby bike stations, leave reviews, and access seamless rental options. Additionally, the interface will be redesigned for a more intuitive, engaging user experience.
A Vision for a Greener Nepal
Looking toward the future, Green Movers has big plans. They aim to expand the Green Way bicycle-sharing system to five additional cities—Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini, Jhapa, and Dharan—spreading their vision of a cleaner, greener Nepal. The company is also developing a new platform within the app to help users discover green products and sustainable lifestyle choices, turning Green Way into a nationwide resource for all things eco-friendly.
As Green Way continues to grow, it’s becoming much more than a transportation app—it’s a movement, bringing together individuals, businesses, and communities committed to building a more sustainable future. Green Way is becoming a symbol of the change that’s possible when people come together for the environment, and its journey is just beginning.
