Safe to Scale: Empowering Nepal’s SMEs with Cybersecurity Tools for Growth

In today’s fast-evolving digital landscape, cybersecurity is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity, especially for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that are scaling operations, digitizing services, and handling sensitive customer data. Recognizing this need, the NIIC 2 Fund recently hosted a specialized masterclass titled "Safe to Scale: Building a Cyber-Secure SME", designed to build awareness and readiness among Nepal’s growing SME ecosystem.

Held in partnership with Eminence Ways, one of Nepal’s leading cybersecurity firms, the session brought together over 40 SME founders and business leaders for a dynamic, hands-on learning experience.

Raising the Bar on Cyber Hygiene for Entrepreneurs

As digital adoption accelerates across industries—from retail and fintech to education and logistics—SMEs are becoming increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats such as phishing, ransomware, and data breaches. Unfortunately, most lack the dedicated IT departments or resources to manage these risks proactively.

The masterclass aimed to bridge this gap by equipping entrepreneurs with practical, business-relevant cybersecurity strategies they can implement immediately—without needing a technical background.

What Made the Session Stand Out

The session blended live demonstrations of real-world threats with step-by-step walkthroughs of basic protection protocols.

Key highlights included:

  • Understanding the Risk Landscape
Participants learned how even basic oversights—like weak passwords or unencrypted data—can expose businesses to serious vulnerabilities.
  • Tools for Protection
The session introduced cost-effective tools for endpoint security, data backup, multi-factor authentication, and email threat detection tailored to SME needs.
  • Live Hacking Simulation
A live simulation of a phishing attack showcased how easily unsuspecting employees can fall victim—and what can be done to stop it.
  • Cyber Hygiene Checklist
Each participant walked away with a simplified cybersecurity checklist designed to guide internal audits and preventive action within their businesses.

Why This Matters for SME Growth

Cybersecurity is often perceived as an IT problem. But for SMEs, it is directly linked to customer trust, operational continuity, and regulatory compliance—all of which are critical for long-term growth and attracting investment.

By embedding cybersecurity into their business DNA early on, SMEs can protect not just their assets, but their reputation and future potential.

This masterclass is part of NIIC 2 Fund’s broader commitment to strengthening investment readiness and resilience among high-potential SMEs in Nepal. The NIIC 2 Fund is supported by Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and implemented by One to Watch.
