The Human API: Cracking the Code on HR & Compliance for Tech Firms

The Human API: Cracking the Code on HR & Compliance for Tech Firms

How do you keep your business compliant without turning into a full-time lawyer? Over 50 tech founders, HR leads, and team managers gathered on August 01 2025, to explore that very question at the NIIC 2 Masterclass: “The Human API: A Practical Guide to HR & Compliance for Tech Firms.”

Organized in collaboration with Vidhi Legal Concern, the session unpacked the fine print of labor laws, contracts, and compliance frameworks, equipping Nepal’s tech and tech-enabled SMEs with the clarity needed to build smarter, stress-free HR systems.

Making HR Less “Hard”

Employment agreements, probation periods, and non-compete clauses might sound like dry topics, but as facilitator Pratistha Bhandari and her team reminded participants, “a weak contract today can become a very expensive problem tomorrow.”

Through real-world case studies, quizzes, and scenario-based exercises, the masterclass translated Nepal’s Labor Act into plain language for founders. Participants debated questions like:

  • Can probation really last up to one year?
  • What’s the maximum period of traineeship?
  • Is Social Security Fund registration optional for IT companies?

What the Session Covered

The two-hour workshop blended legal deep-dives with practical takeaways:

  • Employment Agreements: Why they must be written, what they must include (salary, benefits, job role), and how to avoid clauses that clash with the Labor Act.
  • Nature of Employment: Regular, part-time, casual, and time-based work — and why misclassifying roles creates long-term risk.
  • Non-Compete & Confidentiality: Understanding what’s enforceable in Nepal, what isn’t, and why “the narrower the clause, the higher the chance of enforcement.”
  • Termination & Settlements: The importance of sticking to lawful grounds.
  • Benefits & Working Hours: Minimum salary thresholds, 8-hour daily caps, and clarity on overtime practices.

Building Resilient SMEs

For many attendees, this was the first time they had seen HR compliance broken down into such approachable, bite-sized insights. What could have been an intimidating legal lecture became an interactive exploration, complete with a Q&A and a light-hearted quiz segment.

By helping founders view HR systems not as a burden but as an “API”, a set of connections and safeguards that allow their people to thrive, the masterclass made a compelling case: robust compliance is not red tape, but a growth enabler.

This expert-led workshop was part of NIIC 2’s ongoing commitment to strengthening SME resilience through practical, high-impact learning.
